Proposition, analogy, and appropriation form a sequence of concepts in
philosophy and rhetoric, where propositions serve as truth-bearing
statements, analogies draw comparisons between them, and appropriation
involves adopting or repurposing those comparisons.[1][2]
## Propositions
Propositions represent the abstract meanings of declarative sentences
that carry truth values, such as "twice two are four." They underpin
logical arguments and beliefs, distinct from the sentences expressing
them.[3][4][1]
## Analogies
Analogies compare two domains to infer similarities, like equating
followers to planets orbiting a leader's sun. In logic, they rely on
shared properties or causes, with strength increasing alongside the
number of parallels. Aristotle emphasized their role in securing
plausible admissions without full universals.[2][5]
## Appropriation
Appropriation occurs when analogies are strategically repurposed in
rhetoric or ethics, deriving authority from prior cases to influence
new ones. Misuse leads to false analogies, assuming unshared traits
follow from superficial resemblances. In type theory, it parallels
"propositions as types," where proofs inhabit propositions akin to
functions inhabiting types.[6][7][8][9]
